ANSI/SAIA A92 Requirements
The ANSI/SAIA A92 family of standards governs the design, manufacturing, testing, and safe use of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Key requirements include:
- All MEWPs must be designed, manufactured, and tested in accordance with ANSI/SAIA A92 standards
- Operators must complete formal training before operating any aerial work platform
- Pre-operation inspections are mandatory before each use
- Familiarization training is required when operators use a different type or model of MEWP
- Load capacities must never be exceeded under any circumstances
- Fall protection must be used in accordance with the equipment manufacturer guidelines
Employer Responsibilities
Provide Training
Ensure all operators complete ANSI/SAIA A92-compliant training before operating MEWPs
Document Compliance
Maintain training records, inspection logs, and equipment maintenance documentation
Site Assessment
Evaluate each job site for hazards including overhead obstructions, ground conditions, and weather
Equipment Maintenance
Follow manufacturer maintenance schedules and address deficiencies promptly
Operator Responsibilities
Pre-Use Inspection
Perform a thorough walkaround and function check before each operating shift
Site Assessment
Evaluate the work area for potential hazards, obstructions, and surface conditions
Safe Operation
Operate within rated capacities, maintain proper positioning, and use fall protection
Incident Reporting
Report any malfunctions, damage, or safety incidents to supervisor immediately
